James Mercer Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. One of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was the development of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City as a Black cultural mecca in the early 20th Century. The period is considered a golden age in African American culture, manifesting in literature, music, stage performance and art.

Thurgood Marshall was an American civil rights lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1967 until 1991. He was the Supreme Court's first African-American justice. Prior to being seated on the court, he argued Brown v. Board of Education which resulted in the 1954 landmark decision rejecting the separate but equal doctrine and holding segregation in public education to be unconstitutional.
