Carter Godwin Woodson was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was born in Virginia in 1875. Woodson was the fourth of nine children born to parents who had been enslaved. At the time, schools were not including African American history in their curriculum.
