Advancing our conversation on African Americans and Labor, today we present Mark Dean who is known for his groundbreaking contributions to computer engineering, particularly in the development of personal computing technology. As an engineer and inventor at IBM, he played a pivotal role in designing the IBM personal computer (PC) and was a key figure in the development of the Industry Standard Architecture bus, which allowed computers to support plug-in devices like printers, disk drives, and modems. He was part of the team that developed the first 1-GHz microprocessor, which dramatically increased computing power and efficiency. His contributions to IBM earned him the title of IBM Fellow, the highest technical honor at the company, making him the first African American to receive this distinction. Later in his career, he focused on emerging computing technologies, including AI and next-generation computing architectures. Dean is a prolific inventor, holding more than 40 patents, including several fundamental ones in the field of personal computing.

Carrying on with our focus on African Americans and Labor, today we bring to you Mary Van Brittan Brown who is known for patenting the home security system. In 1966, she, along with her husband Albert Brown, developed a system that included a set of video cameras, a two-way microphone, and a remote control to monitor who was outside the door. It allowed people to visually identify visitors before opening the door, and it also included a method to communicate with them from inside the house. That same year they applied for a patent for their security system. It was granted three years later in 1969. This invention laid the groundwork for modern closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems used in home security today like, making her a pioneer in the field of home safety and surveillance technology.

Expanding on our discussion of African Americans and Labor, today we spotlight Alexander Miles who is best known for his invention of the automatic elevator door mechanism. It is believed that he was inspired to invent the automatic elevator door after witnessing or nearly experiencing an accident where his daughter was almost injured due to an open elevator shaft. Therefore, in 1887, he patented a system that allowed elevator doors to open and close automatically, improving safety and convenience. Before his invention, elevator doors had to be manually operated, which could be hazardous. His innovation helped make elevators more reliable and efficient, especially in multi-story buildings. Miles’ contribution is considered a key development in the evolution of modern elevators.
