From Our Principal

I am blessed to serve as principal at Berlin Intermediate School, where I work with the most amazing students and staff in the world! During my 24 year tenure in Worcester County Public Schools, I have served as an 8th grade social studies teacher at Stephen Decatur Middle School, a high school Curriculum Resource Teacher at Pocomoke High School, an Assistant Principal here at Berlin Intermediate School, and most recently as the Coordinator of Accountability, Assessment and School Counselors at the Central Office. I have learned so many valuable lessons that I bring with me to the principalship at BIS and absolutely loved the opportunity to shape the future for our young people in every role along the way.

I am so grateful to work every day with the students, teachers, and families of our amazing school community! My goal is to remove barriers and ensure every child reaches their greatest potential in a safe, enjoyable, intellectually challenging, and diverse learning environment. I look forward to welcoming you into our school as a partner in education.

At Berlin Intermediate School, we hold high standards for academic success, student wellness and responsible citizenship. Our staff understands the impact they have in each child’s life and is committed to the well-being of the whole child. Our teachers and staff members strive to bring out the best in every student at Berlin Intermediate School as we Believe, Imagine, Succeed and to support Jr. Seahawks who are Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn.

Belief Statements

At the core, beliefs about education impact EVERY decision and action a leader makes for a school. School leaders often implement practices that reflect their own philosophical beliefs. I would like to share some of my beliefs with you.

Students

  • I believe all students can and will learn.

  • I believe we must remove barriers to learning for EVERY child.

  • I believe students are the reason why we are all here.

  • I believe engaged students will exceed our greatest expectations.

  • I believe the more we know about our students, the better we will be able to create the conditions for them to grow as learners and as individuals.

  • I believe in the intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual development of the WHOLE child.

Parents, Families and Our Community

  • I believe we are partners with parents, families, and our community in the development of students.

  • I believe in engaging parents in the learning process in a variety of ways.

  • I believe trusting relationships with parents, families and community members improve the overall performance of students.

  • I believe when we care for our students, we gain the respect of our parents, families, and community.

  • I believe greater respect by members of the community increases their support for our students and school.

Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

  • I believe rigor is the result of intentional instructional decisions and positive teacher- student and student- student relationships.

  • I believe students learn by doing in active, inclusive, and engaging learning environments.

  • I believe we should personalize learning by implementing formative instructional practices.

  • I believe we must teach critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through our content.

  • I believe we must make decisions about curriculum, instruction, and assessment in response to data.

  • I believe grades should reflect what students know and can do.

  • I believe assessment is necessary to determine how well we are meeting our educational goals.
